The Morality of Tax Policy and the Morality of Pro-Life Issues

cartoon of Uncle Sam shaking money from a taxpayerHave you heard the refrain that “everything is a moral issue”? Libertarians and liberals are fond of it, because, it would seem, they are loath to give up the moral high ground to conservatives. In one form or other you can see the refrain here: “In that respect, almost everything associated with the current economic crisis is a matter of justice and injustice and is therefore a moral issue”, here: “There are genuine ethical issues involved with egg freezing, but in a time of war, severe poverty and climate change, they are not the issues which should first spring to mind when we hear the word ‘morality’”; and here: “A working definition of an issue of moral concern is shown to be any issue with the potential to help or harm anyone, including yourself”.

I heard something like this refrain it recently while discussing the slate of Republican candidates with a friend. I was deprecating the relative importance of tax policy to pro-life policy by claiming that moral issues trump pocketbook issues. The reply, “tax policy is a moral issue” struck me as missing the point.

NARAL Says Cain is 100% Pro-Life

Photo of Herman Cain on CNNYesterday, Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America (NARAL = National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League) wrote An Open Letter to Herman Cain. In responding to Cain’s interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan and Cain’s later statement to clarify his position, she condemns Cain for being 100% pro-life. She links to another blog entry at ProChoiceAmerica.org that details five statements Cain made between 8th June and 16th October in which he takes a strong pro-life position.

No Choice for Planned Parenthood Clinics, Abortions Required

Image of Planned Parenthood signWhile Planned Parenthood wants us to believe that it’s all about women’s health, pro-lifers say that PP is all about killing babies, and Rush Limbaugh has often suggested that abortion is virtually a sacrament to these people. Surely these are mischaracterizations. Surely.

Here’s an interesting news story that presents a surprising point of view. The Houston Chronicle reported in August, that a Planned Parenthood clinic in Amarillo and one in Corpus Christi were forced to pull out of the Federation because Planned Parenthood Federation of America adopted a policy, approved by vote of affiliate representatives, that will require affiliates nationwide to provide abortion in at least one clinic, starting in 2013. (Planned Parenthood is not pro-choice, in this case.)

Claudia Stravato and Amanda Stukenberg are not pro-life advocates; they are staunchly pro-abortion. In this article, they claim Continue reading

Time For A New Pro-Life Campaign Strategy, Senator Santorum

Rick Santorum is a stalwart on issues pertaining to the family and abortion.  He may end up being the one I vote for in the Iowa Caucuses.  He is certainly courageous and willing to stand for all of the unborn children, regardless of how they came into this world.  For this he should be commended.  Frankly, I have trouble understanding why he isn’t doing better in the Iowa polls after traveling all over the state meeting voters one-on-one.  He is likeable, knowledgeable and conservative on all three of the traditional Republican stool legs (economics, social issues, defense). I have a few small beefs with some of his political choices, as I think he “plays the game” way too much, but I have very few differences with him in policy.

Nevertheless, I make one plea of Senator Santorum.  Please, please, stop touting your authorship of that impotent piece of legislation called the Partial Birth Abortion (PBA) Ban Act. There are several reasons why you should stop, now. Continue reading
