Implications of Personhood from Conception 2 of 3: “The Pill” and Hormonal Birth Control

In the first post in this series we looked at the implications of a personhood on miscarriage and began looking at hormonal contraceptives. We observed that the pill (and the alternative delivery methods: the patch, ring, and injections) have three functions, one of which is to induce an abortion should conception accidently happen. This post, we will prove our case explicitly.

THE PILL

A law firm advertising for YAZ lawsuits, puts it this way:

“these drugs prevent the release of an egg from the ovary and cause changes in the lining of a woman’s cervix and uterus. As a result, it is harder for sperm to reach the uterus, and more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.”

The pill makes it “more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.” Organon, a Merck subsidiary, describes its of its product’s primary function:

“Over the course of 3 weeks, NuvaRing releases a continuous low dose of estrogen and progestin. Higher estrogen and progestin levels signal your brain not to release the hormones that cause egg maturation. Without an egg ready to be released into the fallopian tube, ovulation cannot occur.”

But dig a little deeper, and one will find a fuller description:

“Although the primary effect of this action is inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus (which increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduce the likelihood of implantation).”

Organon says that “NuvaRing is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women.” For non-physicians, that means that “Prescription NuvaRing is a flexible vaginal ring approved for the prevention of pregnancy in women.” But what is pregnancy?
